The "Religare" exhibition continues until 31 August 2016, with pictures by Jorge R. Pombo, tracing the line between faith and the material world, within the walls of the Church of San Gottardo in Corte - the church of the Milanese-tradition artists - which has recently been restored by the Veneranda Fabbrica del Duomo.
With an average of more than a thousand visitors a day, the exhibition presents a fascinating artistic and anthropological reflection on the relationship between man and religion at a time when the latter is sometimes used as an excuse for violence against others. "Religare", from the Latin word "collect", focuses the viewer's attention on the true meaning of man and religion, and encourages reflection on the relationship between religions themselves.
According to Pombo, anything can be brought together, provided that God is the single point of reference, and indeed, through his work, we gain a profound sense of spirituality, a sense which places man at the heart of things, despite the differences between our various denominations.
Beginning with the first triptych "Jerusalem", "Rome, Vatican City " and "Makkah Al Mukarramah', which unites the three great monotheistic religions of each city, Judaism, Christianity and Islam, Pombo fostered a conceptual and visual connection, via Milan, an city ideal in which these three coexist peacefully.
As a tribute to the city of Milan, Pombo painted "Milan. Duomo. Relic ", a painting that gives form, light and colour to the particularly alarming conditions to which the city is being subjected. The relic of the Holy Nail (Sacro Chiodo), which is kept inside the Duomo, is the most eloquent representation of this, and here, it is positioned with great geographic precision, and covered by bright red, intense brushstrokes.
But the artist's gaze is always marked by optimism above of all; he is in search of a meeting point between religions, because - as the Director of the Veneranda Fabbrica, Gianni Baratta, writes in his introduction to the catalogue: "The Earth is the garden in which this meeting takes place, a space which is available to all, and in which civilizations and cultures find common values and references among themselves"...An intrinsically positive message, full of trust and hope in the men and women who express their goodwill on a daily basis.
The exhibition is open to the public every day except Wednesdays, from 10.00 to 18.00 until 31 August 2016, with access via a Duomo - Museum - S. Gottardo in Corte ticket, from € 2.00.
The Jorge R. Pombo exhibition catalogue can be purchased at a price of € 5.00 at the Grande Museo del Duomo ticket office, in the bookshop in the Cathedral and the Duomo Shop (Piazza del Duomo, on the north side of the Cathedral).
